Terman's own cohort — the "Termites," more than 1,500 California children selected in the 1920s for scores around 135 and up — went on to markedly above-average rates of professional achievement, publications, and income. And yet none produced work at the very pinnacle of their fields: no Nobel laureates emerged from the group, while — famously — William Shockley and Luis Alvarez, two boys who were reportedly screened for the study and missed the cutoff, both went on to win Nobel Prizes in physics. A very high childhood score raised the floor considerably; it did not reserve the ceiling.
