The learning-styles myth

One idea deserves special mention because it's so widespread: the belief that each person has a fixed learning style — visual, auditory, or kinesthetic — and learns best when taught in that style. It's intuitive, it's everywhere, and when researchers have actually tested it, matching instruction to a person's supposed style has repeatedly failed to improve learning. People do have preferences, and some material is genuinely better suited to a diagram or a recording. But the evidence says the format should follow the content, not a label pinned to the learner. We build our learning instruments around the techniques that survive testing — spacing, retrieval, interleaving — rather than the ones that merely feel right.

This matters practically because believing in a fixed style can quietly hold you back. A student convinced they are a "visual learner" may avoid reading dense text or talking problems through aloud — exactly the varied practice that builds flexible understanding.
