How reading speed and comprehension are combined

The tool measures the time spent on an original passage, converts the passage word count into raw words per minute, and then grades five comprehension questions. Effective WPM is raw WPM multiplied by the comprehension proportion, so a fast skim with weak understanding is penalized rather than celebrated.

Reading rate changes with text difficulty, language familiarity, screen size, purpose, and prior knowledge. A single general-prose passage cannot establish someone's universal reading speed, and very high WPM claims should always be interpreted alongside comprehension.

Interpretation standard: observations describe this task; internal indices are model or response summaries, not population rankings. Use the report for education and reflection. See the methodology for limitations.

You read a short original passage at your natural pace, then answer five comprehension questions. Your raw speed is the passage's word count divided by the time you spent reading, expressed in words per minute (WPM).

Are speed-reading claims of 1,000+ WPM real?

Not with full comprehension of new material. Above roughly 400–500 WPM, comprehension of unfamiliar text drops sharply — what's marketed as speed reading is usually skimming, which has its place but isn't the same thing. This test is built to tell the difference.
